Children & Young People

Can hypnotherapy help my child?

Yes, as a mum of three school children, and with seven years teaching hundreds of students at Cardiff Business School, I am passionate about supporting children and teenagers to get back to the happy, secure place they all deserve to enjoy in life. Young people can respond very well to hypnotherapy, provided they recognise there is something they want to change, such as lack of confidence or exam nerves. It is their desire to address an issue – rather than their parents’ hopes and wishes – which is critical to their success.

Hypnotherapy for children and young people

All of my sessions are bespoke, designed around the specific needs and interests of the individual young person. I will partner with them to explore what interests and delights them; sharing with them proven relaxation techniques, and developing their understanding of why they can feel as they do, and what helps them feel better. Our brain changes dramatically during puberty, and consequently sessions for sixth formers are entirely different to those for younger children. Hypnosis isn’t usually appropriate until a child is well into their teens, and I will only use it then if they are comfortable with it.

“My daughter is so much happier and more positive about life in general”

My 12 year old daughter has suffered with anxiety for a number of years and was previously referred for CBT with CAMHS. Unfortunately, her anxiety recently returned and we felt totally helpless as she struggled to go to school and sometimes leave the house. A friend suggested Hypnotherapy as an alternative and within 5 sessions our daughter is like a different child.

We really appreciated the initial consultation with Amy where we both felt a strong connection, something which is very important when choosing a therapist.

Amy’s warm and positive nature quickly rubbed off onto my daughter and she has not taken a day off school for over a month. She is so much happier and more positive about life in general.

I love how Amy never asks my daughter what has been hard about her week, instead she asks what has been ‘great’! She also gave my daughter the option of lying down for a relaxation or to sit up and draw.

The relaxation CD Amy provided also helped my daughter to relax at bedtime. I found hypnotherapy to deliver much quicker results compared to CBT and we intend to go back every few months or so, just to help maintain a positive outlook.

Support children and young people with hypnotherapy

My core approach for all children is one of solution-focus, helping the young person connect to their individual strengths, develop their confidence and self-belief, and grow their resilience.

Up until the age of sixteen, I will ask for a parent or carer to be present, and often invite them to actively take part in the session. Sixth formers too are very welcome to be accompanied by a parent or carer if this is their preference and it will help make the sessions feel more safe, comfortable, and possible for them.

As parents we often overlook how influential we are on our children, and we can all too easily forget to look after our own needs when we are worried about them. For this reason, I invite the main carer to see me for an initial consultation separately to their child. It might be that we decide that we should work together for a short time too.

"She has helped me develop techniques I can use in the long term"

Amy is an amazingly positive, caring and patient woman and has helped me loads. She has helped me develop techniques I can use in the long term to cope with challenges I was facing at the time. I am very grateful.
