Gut-directed hypnotherapy for IBS
1 in 10 of us suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).
A combination of stomach cramps, bloating, nausea, indigestion, constipation, diarrhoea, and needing to get to a loo fast are common symptoms people struggle with if they have IBS. Quality of life can be really affected, sometimes leading to isolation, stress, and feelings of anxiety or depression.

How can hypnotherapy help?
IBS is one of the areas where the most research has been done for hypnotherapy, with a strong body of evidence confirming it can help improve symptoms for over 60% of sufferers. Consequently, NICE includes hypnotherapy on its list of treatments, although not all NHS Trusts choose to prioritise its funding. The most straightforward summary of the research I’ve found is here:

I use classic solution-focused hypnotherapy in sessions to ease a client’s general anxiety and stress, supporting them to feel more physically and mentally relaxed.
Gut-directed hypnotherapy is central to each session though. This is an evidence-based, specialist approach which includes direct suggestions to a client in trance for the control and normalisation of gastrointestinal function, as well as metaphors to aid easing of symptoms. Over the course of around six sessions, the aim is to build a client’s confidence and skill in using this approach in self-hypnosis, so that they have a life-long skill to help them manage their condition.
